Another interesting article for you to read. It appears our friendly neighborhood scientists at Sandia National Laboratories may have come up with an idea for producing nuclear fusion that surpasses the breakeven point (this is the point where the process produces more energy than what is put in). They hope to have their device up and running by 2013 (assuming Torquemada doesn’t win the election and kill all scientists for their blasphemy).
This would be a first step, and many things could go wrong. Plus, even it was successful, the actual commercial application would be decades away. But it could be the first step in completely reinventing the world. Imagine what the world could look like with an unlimited power supply.
Ah science, how I love you so…no one in the government appears to…but I do…
Speaking of Explorers…
Just read this article written by Richard Branson. I of course knew about Virgin Galactic, but I did not know there was a Virgin Oceanic. It appears that Mr. Branson will be teaming up with James Cameron to explore the deepest parts of the ocean. Seriously…this man is just awesome. We need more people like him, wanting and willing to push the boundaries.
We need more explorers.
I am a fan of Downton Abbey (if you don’t know, watch it! NOW!) So I find this skit somewhat amusing. That’s even considering that I can’t stand Arbys.
(Sorry couldn’t get WordPress to play nice with the clip, so you’ll have to click the link)
Many of you may have heard about James Cameron (directed Titanic, Avatar, etc) dove to the bottom of Challenger Deep (deepest point on Earth) in a submersible (that he designed) the other day. With Cameron doing something like that, plus all the billionaires starting space companies (many I’ve documented in previous posts), it just proves that money really does allow you to do some amazing things.
Yes, yes…money can also cause EVIL, but the right person with the right dream and enough money can shape the world we live in.
Now…where did I put that MegaMillions ticket…
Let me start by saying that when I left work today I swore I smelled smoke. It being a very windy day I assumed (correctly) that a small fire had broken out in the foothills west of Denver. At the time I couldn’t see anything so I started my drive home. A half hour and several miles later I merge onto I-70 westbound, which affords a very nice view of downtown. Well today that view was partially obscured by a great plume of smoke drifting in from the the foothills. The sight was spectacular. If I had not been driving (why don’t we have self driving cars yet?) I would have snapped a picture on my phone. The scene was like something from a movie (think end of the world or possibly alien invasion). I know people are being evacuated from their homes and their is the chance for loss of life, but in that brief glance it was like living in a story…and I thought I would share.
So much for me being on a regular blogging schedule…it’s just so much easier to come home from work and sit on the couch…
Writing is inching along. I’ve managed to stay focused on the one project for almost a month now..so I’ve got that going for me.
More rejections for The Third Age queries I’ve sent out (but we signed Manning, so that makes everything better!!!). I’m to the point now where I think Third Age needs to spend some time on the shelf. I like the story, and I think it is one that needs to be told, but clearly something is not working. I will keep writing on the current project, then when I’m done with that I will come back and revisit TTA. Hopefully in a year or so I will have gained perspective on whatever is flawed with the story and be able to fix it.
On the bright side we’ve signed Manning…(wait am I saying that too much…nope) WE SIGNED MANNING!!!
Back to the scrivener’s pen as I try and write something that will get me published. Hopefully on the first day of Spring next year I will be much further down the published path.
